Frequently Asked Questions
What is Waldorf early childhood education?
Waldorf education is a holistic approach developed over 100 years ago by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. In a Waldorf early childhood classroom, young children learn primarily through imitation. Teachers strive to be worthy of imitation in what is brought to the children through actions, speech, and through creating a nurturing and harmonious classroom.
The daily rhythm includes meaningful work such as baking, gardening, and handcrafts, which support fine motor development, patience, and a sense of purpose. Pre-literacy skills are fostered through songs, rhymes, verses, and storytelling, laying a strong foundation for language.
Ample time is given for deep, imaginative play, which helps children develop creativity, emotional regulation, and executive function. Art is an integral part of Waldorf education, reflected both in the thoughtfully designed environment and in the creative work children engage in, using natural materials and high quality supplies.
Do you go outdoors every day?
Yes! We have a large, enclosed play yard and garden and we go outside in all weather. It’s important that your child has the proper gear to best enjoy the outdoors. We particularly like Sunday Afternoons sun hats (a local company!), Bogs boots, and Reima rain pants, rain coat, and 100% waterproof rain mittens.
What is your philosophy around media?
We believe, and current research affirms, that frequent or excessive electronic media consumption is detrimental to a young child’s developing neurology. We understand that some families may choose to watch media with their child but we respectfully ask that during the school week, your child refrains from consuming media. What a child watches on a screen inhibits, rather than contributes to, their creative play and we want children to be as free as possible in their play.
Do you have a dress code?
We want your child to be comfortable and free to move, play, and explore throughout the day. Please dress them in clothes that can get messy and are suitable for active play. In support of our media-free environment, we ask that all licensed character items, including clothing, shoes, lunchboxes, etc. be left at home. This helps maintain an imaginative atmosphere and allows each child’s creativity to shine without outside influences.
Do you provide lunch?
We provide a warm, nutritious midmorning snack. Children bring a packed lunch from home, and those staying for aftercare should also bring an afternoon snack.
Does my child need to be potty trained to attend Mountain Star?
Yes, all children must be fully potty trained.
